Position SummaryThe Nursery Manager will oversee the planning, establishment, and operation of tree nurseries within the project area. This role involves managing nursery staff, ensuring quality seedling production, coordinating with local communities and partners, and maintaining high standards of environmental and operational efficiency.Key Responsibilities:Nursery Management:
  • Oversee day-to-day operations of the nursery including seed sowing, transplanting, watering, weeding, pest control, and hardening off.
  • Develop and implement nursery schedules and production plans aligned with the project’s targets.
[ad]Seedling Production:
  • Ensure the production of healthy, high-quality seedlings (native and agroforestry species) to meet planting targets.
  • Manage seed sourcing, storage, and germination protocols.
Staff Supervision:
  • Train and supervise nursery assistants and casual laborers.
  • Promote safe and efficient work practices and provide continuous capacity building.
Inventory & Reporting:
  • Maintain accurate records of seedling production, survival rates, and inputs used.
  • Prepare regular progress and inventory reports for project management.
Community Engagement:
  • Work with community groups and stakeholders to promote participation in nursery activities.
  • Provide training and support to community-based nurseries as needed.
Environmental Compliance:
  • Ensure nursery operations follow environmental sustainability practices and are climate-resilient.
  • Monitor for pests, diseases, and environmental stressors and take corrective actions promptly.
Qualifications and Experience:
  • A degree in Agriculture, Forestry, Environmental Science, or related field.
  • At least 3 years of experience in nursery management or a similar agricultural role.
  • Strong knowledge of tree propagation techniques, especially of native and agroforestry species.
  • Proven experience managing teams and working in rural settings.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Fluency in English and local language(s) is an advantage.
  • Knowledge of gender and inclusion principles in community-based projects is a plus.

  • Knowledge of agroforestry and climate-smart agriculture practices.
  • Competence in data collection and basic reporting tools (Excel, logbooks, etc.).
  • Ability to ride a motorbike and travel to field locations.
