As experts in healthcare IT experts, Apex is committed to building systems for healthcare organizations to seamlessly communicate and exchange data across different systems and devices.Summary:The Driver Specialist / Trainer will provide expert-level transportation and field operations support to the Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU) Ghana Detachment. This role is vital to facilitating safe and efficient field research activities in support of NAMRU’s biomedical research mission. The ideal candidate brings extensive local knowledge of Ghana's road networks, field research experience, and the ability to train other drivers in accordance with U.S. government and NAMRU standards.The work under this contract will be performed at the U.S. Naval Medical Research Unit EURAFCENT offices in Cairo, Egypt, or at other designated locations in special circumstances. Responsibilities:Essential Job Functions:
  • Safely operate a variety of government-owned and leased vehicles, including U.S. Embassy vehicles, to transport personnel, equipment, and specimens to and from research sites.
  • Train and mentor assigned drivers and field personnel on proper vehicle operation, safety procedures, defensive driving, and field logistics protocols.
  • Conduct regular route planning, risk assessments, and trip briefings to ensure safety and efficiency of field missions.
  • Maintain accurate vehicle logbooks and fuel records in compliance with U.S. Embassy and NAMRU regulations.
  • Conduct and document preventive maintenance checks and inspections (PMCS) on all assigned vehicles; coordinate necessary repairs and servicing.
  • Support field collection operations involving entomological and mammalian traps; assist with setup and retrieval of field equipment as needed.
  • Serve as a field liaison, helping research teams navigate rural or remote areas with consideration for local conditions and security.
  • Coordinate with Ghanaian and U.S. government partners as required to support NAMRU operations.
  • Ensure all transportation-related activities support the security, logistical, and scientific goals of NAMRU's mission.
Qualifications:Necessary Skills and Knowledge:
  • Knowledge of NAMRU’s research mission and partner sites.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Minimum of ten years of job-related experience as a field research assistant and previous work experience that endows keen knowledge of Ghana’s roads.
  • Language proficiency in English, and at least one other locally spoken language.
  • Field experiences using entomological and mammalian collection traps.
  • Experience driving/operating U.S. Embassy vehicles, as well as knowledge of procedures for maintaining logbooks and conducting regular preventive maintenance.
  • Travel Requirements: Travel may include Djibouti, Jordan, Nigeria, and other countries in Africa and the Middle East, depending on research requirements.
  • Must be a US citizen.
