- The Shiftboss role is a regulatory mandated role that leads the Quality Assurance and Control and to ensure compliance to the mining and other related legislation.
- Risk Manage all underground mining ore extraction, material handling and underground constructional activities to the required mine and industry standards.
- Assess risks for all tasks and ensure they are controlled before and during task execution.
- Report all incidents and ensure they have been investigated and corrective actions completed on time.
- Act on all corrective actions assigned to you or under your jurisdiction and ensure timely completion.
- Investigate all operational incidents in assigned work areas and prepare reports with recommendations for your supervisor. for onward submission to management.
- Implement safe procedures for transportation of men and material and prevent shortages of materials (consumables) underground.
- Implement shaft monitoring system.
- Ensure that all shaft banks, surface and yards are properly house kept. Use approved tools to prevent accidents within the sections.
- Monitor, record, and report on material haulage and hoisting activities to repository. Achieve daily set targets.
- Ensure that all mine shafts banks, surface and yard demarcations, shaft stations, shaft loading points, conveyors, storage areas and the installations therein are well kept.
- Ensure that rail haulage infrastructure is well maintained and managed.
- Ensure that railway traffic, tipping points, chutes, crushers, conveyors skip buckets are appropriately managed for optimal productivity.
- Implement strategies of reducing cost by offering a prudent material usage by mobbing material leftovers for reuse
- Manage contractor activities per mine standards.
- Legally comply with all regulatory requirements and execute any other tasks as assigned by supervisor
- BSc. / Diploma in Mining Engineering or equivalent.
- Two (3) to Five (5) years' operational experience within an underground mining environment of which at least two (2) years is at supervisory level.
- Knowledge of ore extraction by underground mining methods (LHOPS & UHDF), material handling (Grizzlies, Rock chains, Rock breakers, conveyors, chutes, crushers, skips etc.) and underground construction is a plus.
- Demonstrated experience with and knowledge of fundamental underground development and production methods.
- Proficient in the use of Mining Software.
- Understands the mining processes and actively contributes in part to delivery of the expected outcome / service the mining processes deliver.
- Has demonstrated the ability to apply technical skills and/or delivery of a service within one or more of the mining processes with minimal supervision.
- Can identify potential problems and propose solutions for higher approval.
- Directly responsible for delivering a production aspect of the plan.
- Understands good underground production practices, management, support systems, and how each should interact to deliver targeted performance
- Understands the adjacent technical disciplines (geology, processing, engineering etc.) and participates in discussions with colleagues in these disciplines on areas of overlap and opportunity.
- Uses cost-benefit thinking to set priorities and identify cost-effective approaches
- Actively looks for ways to manage costs without impacting on planned outcomes
