- The University of Mines and Technology, Tarkwa, was established in 2004, by an Act of Parliament, University of Mines and Technology, Tarkwa Act, 2004 (Act 677).
- The vision of the University is to become a world-renowned University recognised for excellence in research, innovation and producing world-class professionals specialising in sustainable mining, petroleum, technology and related disciplines.

- As enshrined in the University of Mines and Technology Statutes (2012), Statute 7, the Vice Chancellor is the Executive Head of the University and is responsible, under the Council of the University, for both the academic and administrative functions.
- The Vice Chancellor is also the Chief Disciplinary Officer of the University.
- Must be a Full Professor of international acclaim and a distinguished scholar in a relevant discipline;
- Must demonstrate the ability to lead the University by identifying opportunities, developing and implementing a strategic vision that ensures the implementation of the University's Strategic Plan;
- Must exhibit a high sense of leadership and organisational skills;
- Must be an ethical leader with unblemished character;
- Must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills and must be a team player;
- Must be a visionary, business-oriented person able to establish rapport between industry and the University for common purpose;
- Must have the capacity to raise and manage funds and resources for research and other development activities of the University; and
- Must be able to serve a full four-year term of office before attaining the compulsory retiring age of sixty (60) years.
- The appointment, which is full-time, shall be for four (4) years in the first instance, and may be subject to renewal for another term of four (4) years or part thereof.
