A fast-growing, flexible-packaging manufacturer in Accra now seeks a high caliber Health, Safety & Environment Officer for its Manufacturing Plant in Spintex.Position Summary
To ensure that all health, safety, and environmental regulations are effectively implemented and followed across the plant, promoting a safe workplace, preventing accidents, and ensuring compliance with local laws and international standards.Key Duties & Responsibilities
  • Conduct daily inspections of production areas (slitting, printing, lamination, ink kitchen, pouching, warehouse).
  • Ensure workers are wearing appropriate PPE (gloves, masks, safety shoes, ear protection).
  • Monitor machine guarding, emergency stops, and fire safety systems.
  • Investigate workplace accidents/incidents, prepare reports, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Maintain accident/incident register and track trends.
  • Conduct risk assessments for machinery, handling of inks/solvents, and storage of chemicals.
  • Support safe handling and disposal of hazardous substances (inks, adhesives, solvents, cleaning agents).
  • Monitor waste management: segregation, labelling, and safe disposal.
  • Oversee treatment and disposal of solvent waste, ink sludge, and film scrap.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental regulations on emissions, noise, and wastewater.
  • Promote initiatives to reduce energy, water, and material waste.
  • Conduct HSE inductions for new employees and contractors.
  • Organise fire drills, evacuation exercises, and first aid training.
  • Train staff on chemical handling, spill response, and emergency procedures.
  • Develop and update HSE policies, procedures, and work instructions.
  • Maintain MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets) library for all chemicals.
  • Ensure compliance with ISO 45001 (Occupational Health & Safety) and ISO 14001 (Environment).
  • Liaise with local authorities and auditors during inspections.
  • Prepare monthly HSE performance reports for management review.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree/diploma in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, or related field.
  • 3+ years’ HSE experience in manufacturing (preferably printing/packaging/chemicals).
  • Knowledge of OSHA, ISO 45001, ISO 14001, and local labour laws.
  • Certification in First Aid / Fire Safety / HSE management (advantage).
  • Strong communication and training skills.
  • Proactive, detail-oriented, and able to enforce compliance across teams.
