Job SummaryThe Agronomist will play a key role in supporting farmers and agricultural projects by providing expert guidance on crop production, soil management, climate-smart innovations and sustainable farming practices. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting field research, advising on modern agronomic techniques and ensuring that agricultural operations align with best practices for productivity and environmental sustainability.Key Responsibilities
  • Analyse soil composition, drainage, and fertility, and develop strategies for improving soil health.
  • Provide technical expertise on crop production, soil fertility, and pest management.
  • Plan and manage crop planting, growth, and harvesting, including selecting appropriate crop varieties and optimizing planting schedules.
  • Conduct field trials, research, and data analysis to improve yields.
  • Develop and implement strategies for controlling pests and diseases while minimizing the use of harmful chemicals.
  • Recommend appropriate fertilizer applications based on soil and plant needs, promoting efficient
  • nutrients use and minimizing environmental pollution.
  • Conduct research on crop varieties, agricultural practices, and new technologies to improve crop production and sustainability.
  • Provide expert advice and guidance to farmers, out-grower scheme members and agricultural businesses on various aspects of crop production.
  • Monitor and evaluate crop performance, recommending timely interventions.
  • Collect and analyse data on crop performance, soil conditions, and environmental factors to inform decision-making and improve practices.
  • Train and support farmers and agricultural workers on modern, sustainable agricultural practices, soil conservation, and environmental stewardship.
  • Collaborate with project teams to implement innovative agricultural terminologies.
  • Prepare and submit detailed periodic report to stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with researchers, government agencies and agribusiness to improve agricultural outcomes.
  • Stay abreast with advancements in agricultural technology and integrate them into farming practices.
Required Skills or ExperienceQualifications, Competencies and Experience Required
  • Bachelor’s degree in Agronomy, Crop Science, General Agricultural Science, or related field.
  • Strong knowledge of soil science, crop management and agricultural technology.
  • Excellent understanding of soil composition, fertility, and good agricultural practices.
  • Strong knowledge of planting, growth, and harvesting techniques for various crops.
  • Ability to diagnose issues with crops and develop effective and sustainable solutions.
  • Knowledge in identifying pests and diseases, and developing appropriate control strategies that minimize environmental impact (Integrated Pest Management skills).
  • Knowledge of irrigation techniques, drainage, and water conservation.
  • Ability to analyze information, evaluate options, and make sound decisions.
  • Practical experience in fieldwork and farmer engagement.
  • Minimum of 3 years proven relevant experience as an Agronomist or in a similar role.
  • Excellent communication and problem solving skills.
  • Strong Report writing and Presentation skills.
  • Experience with agricultural software, GIS tools and precision farming technologies.
  • Good Computing Skills.
  • Commitment to sustainable agriculture and rural development.
  • Willingness and commitment to travel to rural communities and work in field conditions
