Job Title: Technical Lead – Core Platform & Backup SystemsOrganization/ Department: Group Technology & Innovation / Infrastructure EngineeringReports to: Unit Head, Enterprise EngineeringSalary Grade/ Band: 4CJob PurposeThe Technical Lead for Core Platform & Backup Systems oversee the design, architecture, implementation, and management of core platforms and backup infrastructure. This role ensures high availability, scalability, security, and performance to support critical business applications. Responsibilities include driving innovation, modernization, and cybersecurity integration, while aligning with enterprise architecture and business goals. The position requires a balance of strategic vision and hands-on execution across core platforms and backup technologies.JOB CONTEXTSolution Architecture: The Technical Lead is responsible for creating solution architectures that effectively address both present and future business requirements. This includes designing systems that are scalable, adaptable, and capable of supporting evolving organizational needs.Solution Implementation: Once the architecture is designed, the Technical Lead oversees its implementation to ensure that solutions are fully functional, of high quality, and easy to manage. This process involves building robust frameworks that are reliable and maintainable within the enterprise environment.Governance: The role includes governing the proper implementation of solution architectures across various projects and programs. The Technical Lead ensures that established standards and architectural guidelines are followed to maintain consistency and alignment with organizational objectives.Strategic Engagement: Participation at a strategic level is essential, involving engagement in long-term planning and decision-making that impacts the organization. The Technical Lead contributes to shaping the direction of enterprise initiatives and ensures that architectural decisions support overall business strategies.Functional Requirements: A key responsibility is to verify that solution architectures fulfil all defined business needs. This involves translating requirements into technical solutions that deliver tangible value to the organization.Service Quality: Maintaining high standards for service quality is crucial. The Technical Lead ensures that solutions are reliable, perform efficiently, and result in strong user satisfaction across the enterprise.Systems Management: Effective systems management is emphasized, focusing on sustainability, security, and ease of maintenance. The Technical Lead ensures that all architectural solutions are secure and can be efficiently managed over their lifecycle.Key ResponsibilitiesSolution Design and ArchitectureDesign and implement the overall core platform and backup systems architecture.
Ensure highest level of core platform and backup systems availability.
Advise internal customers on solution design best practices and becoming the go-to-person for technical guidance on core platform and backup infrastructure.
Serve as the subject matter expert for all solution development within domain.
Gather and help define requirements within domain.
Work with the internal customer to explore the use of out of the box technologies to solve their business needs.
Ensure complex solution requests are initiated into the project pipeline and serve as SME through the life of the project.
Design and build simple solutions to solve business needs using out of the box capabilities as well as innovative approaches.Strategic ImpactDefine and maintain standards for the core platform and back infrastructure.
Contribute and be part of medium and large projects within and outside of the enterprise engineering team.
Understand other business areas priorities to help them understand where new technology can help them achieve their goals.Decision MakingResolve complex problems within the core systems and backup infrastructure technology space.
You will be responsible for making important day to day decisions to but with guidance from your reporting manager when needed for longer term impact.Documentation & ReportingMaintain accurate documentation of architectural designs, configurations, and operational procedures.
Prepare capacity planning reports and performance dashboards.
Develop and maintain knowledge base for operational excellence and cybersecurity awareness.Service and SupportBecome the go-to-person for internal customer questions, inquiries and challenges.
Determining when an issue should be escalated through incident response teams.Team ManagementAble to develop and grow internal talent.
Ability to deal with complex issues and work autonomously, keeping management informed of any major issues.
Advise management on core platform systems, storage & backup systems trends, and individual training requirements.
Ensure timely feedback on all activities, constraints and follow up on issues in the domainCollaboration & Stakeholder Engagement Partner with application, network, and security teams to deliver integrated infrastructure solutions. Act as a technical advisor to senior management on core platform and backup strategies. Provide leadership during audits, compliance reviews, and strategic planning sessions.JOB PROFILEExperience & Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in engineering or IT related field, Master’s degree is a plus. At least seven years of systems engineering experience while meeting expertise requirements. Must be a subject matter expert in critical core systems and backup infrastructure including architecture, deployment, and disaster recovery. Demonstrated track record in the successful design and deployment of critical core platforms, including IBM Power Systems, Oracle Exadata, and HP Integrity Systems Deep and broad understanding and experience in the following areas: core platform systems, storage and backup systems, cloud computing and integration technologies. Solid understanding of Linux, Windows servers, and workstation operating systems. Knowledge of systems management, performance tuning, and monitoring tools. Enterprise level experience with backup, restore, and Disaster Recovery planning. Industry certifications (AIX, ITIL, LINUX, Oracle, IBM or another Enterprise Linux certification) are plus. High level of proficiency in documentation with Microsoft Visio and report writing. Experience and good understanding TCP/IP and data network technologies Proven experience of problem-solving with the ability to identify alternative solutions to complex issues. Experience with storage and SAN technologies; iSCSI, FC, Zoning and Storage Tiering. Understanding of clustering and other high availability/fault tolerance technologies.Skills, Capabilities & Direct Attributes Comprehensive understanding of industry standards. Proven ability to maintain a clear focus on achieving results that meet professional and quality standards, within agreed timescales. Ability to work with diverse workforce. Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present complex information to technical and non-technical stakeholders. Must be organized and detail oriented. Team leader and proven ability to take the lead role on projects to initiate changes. Proven ability to motivate and coach individuals to develop their skills enabling them toachieve their best and to contribute to the overall success of the team.
