Our experienced team members are our most precious asset, having discovered, explored and developed more than 24Moz of gold resources and reserves in Ghana; and having managed Ghana's largest underground mine.About This RoleThis role will be responsible to support the Senior Safety Officer – Underground by coordinating, implementing and enforcing health and safety requirements across underground operations. The role assists in achieving high H&S performance by supporting operational and contractor leadership on policy, procedural, regulatory, and standard requirements and by coordinating the implementation of incident prevention programmes in line with approved Health and Environment (H&E) plans and objectives.Key Responsibilities
  • Support the execution of day‑to‑day Underground Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) activities by providing technical support and contributing to the effective implementation of the Health and Safety Management System.
  • Assist with compliance audits, workplace inspections, risk assessments and other safety evaluations to support effective HSE management at the underground operation.
  • Monitor and enforce compliance with safe work procedures and statutory requirements, actively promoting a strong safety culture focused on preventing injuries, protecting assets, and minimizing environmental impact. Escalate any conditions that pose an immediate danger to life or health to operations supervisors, unit managers, and HSE leadership.
  • Support the identification of critical controls and assist with the implementation of appropriate risk‑reduction and incident‑prevention measures.
  • Ensure employees and contractors receive adequate safety information, induction, and ongoing awareness to enable safe execution of work activities.
  • Facilitate safety meetings, toolbox talks, and safety engagements with Asante employees and contractor personnel.
  • Maintain a strong understanding of the site Emergency Response Plan and work closely with the Mine Rescue Team to support coordinated response activities aimed at reducing injury, damage, and operational losses during emergencies.
  • Assist with the delivery of underground safety inductions and basic safety training programmes for employees and contractors.
  • Prepare and submit accurate weekly and monthly reports to the Senior Safety Officer on work activities, safety performance, and identified risks.
  • Coordinate the compilation and maintenance of equipment registers and inspection schedules to ensure all equipment is routinely inspected, compliant, and fit for purpose.
  • Conduct regular underground site inspections and safety walks to maintain visible safety leadership and ensure compliance with HSE standards.
  • Review personal protective equipment (PPE) specifications and quality and ensure effective use, care, and maintenance.
  • Perform other work‑related duties as assigned to support HSE objectives at the underground operation.
Education, Work Experience & Key Competencies
  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Engineering, Science, or a related technical discipline.
  • Minimum of 2 years' experience working as a Safety Officer in the mining, construction, or similar industrial environment. Including at least 2 years' experience in underground operations.
  • NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC) in Occupational Health and Safety is mandatory.
  • Must possess a Minerals Commission HSE Officer Certificate of Competency.
  • Valid Ghanaian Class C Driver's License is required.
  • Strong knowledge of applicable Ghanaian health and safety legislation, particularly the Minerals and Mining (Health, Safety and Technical) Regulations, 2012 (L.I. 2182) and associated legislative instruments.
  • Sound understanding of Health and Safety Management Systems and their application in mining operations.
  • Proven knowledge and practical experience in risk management and loss prevention processes.
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge and experience in Underground Mining Operations and associated health and safety risks.
  • Ability to effectively manage and resolve conflict in a professional and constructive manner.
  • Strong capability in monitoring, managing, and maintaining accurate safety and operational information.
  • Well‑developed planning, organizational and prioritization skills to manage multiple tasks efficiently.
