- The overall function of the Director of Nursing Services shall be to provide leadership, management and direction to the Nursing and Midwifery staff, ensure high level of nursing/midwifery standards, ensure thorough monitoring of nursing/midwifery activities, research, policy development and implementation and provide technical advice on nursing/midwifery professional practice in the Hospital.
- Provide technical advice on nursing and midwifery matters to the Chief Executive.
- Be responsible for the provision of quality nursing and midwifery services in the Hospital
- Ensure the development of appropriate policies, protocols/guidelines and standards for the efficient provision of nursing and midwifery services in the Hospital.
- Ensure the regular monitoring of standards of nursing and midwifery services within the Hospital
- Submit periodic and timely reports on nursing and midwifery activities within the Hospital to the Chief Executive.
- Establish and promote networks with local and other international nursing and midwifery organizations.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of strategic plans for nursing and midwifery services in the Hospital.
- Work in collaboration with other stakeholders in the health sector in the formulation of health sector reforms and policies.
- Provide technical advice on human resource issues relating to nursing and midwifery in the Hospital.
- Contribute to research and development activities in nursing and midwifery within the Hospital etc.
- Coordinate the training and development of Nursing staff and various Nurse trainees.

- Lead in Budget Preparation and Procurement Plans of the Directorate
- Lead in the preparation of Programme of Work (POW) and Action Plans of the Directorate
- Attend Central Management Team Meetings
- Responsible for Performance Review Programmes/Meetings of the Directorate
- Responsible for Nursing & Midwifery Directorate Management Team Members Meetings
- Registered General Nurse or Midwife with a relevant post-graduate qualification in Nursing/Midwifery or equivalent, plus a minimum of three (3) years’ working experience at the level of Deputy Director or Chief Nursing Officer (CNO)
- OR Registered General Nurse or Midwife with a relevant post graduate qualification in Nursing/Midwifery or equivalent, plus a minimum of eight (8) years’ working experience at the level of Deputy Chief Nursing Officer (DCNO);
- OR Registered General Nurse or Midwife with a relevant post graduate qualification in Nursing/Midwifery or equivalent, plus a minimum of thirteen (13) years’ working experience at the level of Principal Nursing Officer (PNO)
- OR Registered General Nurse (RGN) or Midwife with Fellowship in Nursing/Midwifery or equivalent, with a minimum of five (5 years working experience at the level of Senior Nurse Specialist.
- OR. Registered General Nurse (RGN) or Midwife with a minimum of fifteen (15) years working experience post Nursing/Midwifery Officer grade with Membership in Nursing/Midwifery (Nurse Specialist) or equivalent or Membership in Nursing/Midwifery or equivalent with a minimum of ten (10) years’ working experience at the level of Nurse Specialist.
- Evidence of good standing with the relevant professional body. (Nursing & Midwifery Council)
- Evidence of leadership and continuing professional development and training in Management field.
- Must have hands-on experience, as well as advance knowledge in Computer skills and be an effective team player.
- A broad knowledge base and experience of Hospital and Sector policies and operating procedures.
- Knowledge and experience of quality assurance.
- Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
- Supervisory/team leadership experience.
- Wide range of experience in all aspects of hospital services.
- Research experience.
- Hands-on Nursing/Midwifery practice experience.
- Experience in Programme of Work (POW) and Budget preparation and implementation
- In-depth knowledge of Hospital procedures and KPI/KQIs on patient care.
- Good knowledge of legal framework underpinning the MOH and its agencies.
- In-depth knowledge and understanding of changing standards in nursing administration.
- Knowledge and experience of health services quality assurance.
- Ability to work under pressure.
- Demonstrate professional, clear and compassionate communication with staff, clients and community partners of the Hospital.
- Ability to accurately and effectively assess problems and identify and implement solutions.
- Ability to create a climate of trust and mutual respect, increasing the potential for employees to be productive and to feel welcome, valued, and motivated.
- Effective delegation to ensure staff are able to meet the expectations and requirements of their job and to ensure all staff are able to develop new job skills and competencies.
